This started out as a Squier Affinity P bass that I bought for $99 and was a great player... once I did fret work, as usual of course... but I kinda got carried away as time went on. The body was a very lightweight wood and had a glossy red finish, both of which I really didn't care too much for because the light body tended to make the neck dive and the color... well, I'm not a red bass kinda guy. I tend to like more subdued colors on my basses. So I made a body out of red oak, that was step one of many mods. I also cut down the headstock, rewound the pickups and changed the magnets to large soapbar ceramics, made a pickguard out of 4" PVC drain pipe, did some fret work and strung it with RotoSound FM66 strings (oh yea... I applied fretmarker decals, fleur de lis, just to try them out. I kinda like them and the fact that they add a personal touch with such ease is a plus). This bass seems to be my go-to gigging bass and it's tone is to die for. It has a natural aggresive overdriven tone that's about as close as you can get to the Billy Sheehan tone without having to bi-amp or use effects. But of course I couldn't leave well enough alone so I added a Model One at the neck, a MM style dual coil humbucker I made just below the split p pickups and added a three way switch. The switch positions allow just the MM pickup, just the split p pickups and the third position has the Model One in series humbucking and one coil of the MM to add a little bit of sparkle to the wooliness. It's a pretty friggin awesome bass now. This is the most recent pic of Slugger and I playing Halloween weekend 2010 at Phoenix Hill Tavern here in Lou-evil.
