This is a modified 'J Reynolds' short
scale (30") P bass. It started off as the bass below which I bought
at my local Music Go Round for $60. I wanted a practice bass that I could
travel with so it needed to be pretty small. This thing fit in a guitar
gig bag and was very light so it pretty much fit the bill. However the
body was the weak link in the chain. It lacked the solidity and stiffness
to provide a good solid foundation between nut and bridge saddles so harmonics
really suffered. On the other hand, the neck was fantastic. It just felt
solid and smooth, really one of the best necks I've played so I decided
to make a decent body for it. I reshaped the headstock, swapped out the
chrome hardware with some black ones from my parts bin and then went to Home
Depot to get some lumber. I used a plank of walnut I had lying around as
the backbone to give the bass a nice solid foundation and made the body wings out of
construction grade pine and underlayment. One side of the underlayment was
a dark birch with some nice graining but the other side was a spalted
light wood... not too sure on the species but I thought it looked cool
enough to use.
Although it's still not finished and is actually quite the salvage build, it is
a wonderful bass and I enjoy playing it a lot. It's made it's way onto the stage
a number of times and I'll continue using it for a long time to come.
